Sample School Nursing Curriculum
- As a prospective applicant to a master’s school nursing degree program in the United States-- your
first step to becoming a full-time school nurse-- you are perhaps curious about the various courses
and practicums you will take while you pursue your master’s degree in school nursing at a fully
accredited and recognized U.S. university.
What we have provided here is a general overview of the syllabus. Your program might not be

- Degree Program Length
The MS in School Nursing degree is usually a 30-credit program designed specifically for nurses
who want to lead in educational environments. A 9-month full-time degree, it is divided into
graduate nursing core courses and school nurse instructional courses. You will typically start your
degree in September and conclude your degree in June the following year after which you will soon
commence working in your full-time role as a school nurse. Alphabet Education is with you all the

- What is a credit?
Credits are the number of hours you will study in that course per week. For example, if you are
taking a 3-hour credit course, you will take classes for 3 hours a week for that specific course. Some
courses might have a lab component which might or might not add to the number of credit hours
you will spend taking that specific course.
- Sample Graduate Core Courses – approximately 9 credits
• NUR 4001: Theoretical Foundations for Nursing
• NUR 4002: Population Health, Legislation, and Social Policy
• NUR 4003: Nursing Research Strategies: Translational Science
- School Nurse Instructional Component – approximately 24 Credits
Courses like these are required for School Nurse Certification:
• NUR 7000: School Nursing Practice
• NUR 7001: Healthcare of the School-Age Child
• NUR 7003: School Nursing Practicum (Clinical)
• NUR 7004: Wellness and Health Promotion
• NUR 7005: Advanced Health Assessment for School Nurses
• CSP 7006: Counseling Skills for the School Nurse
• SPC 7007: Speech and Language Development
• PSY 7008: Psychology of the Exceptional Child
In addition to these types of courses, you will also pursue a nursing practicum in a school setting
which will be supervised by one of your professors. You will literally learn the ropes so that once
you commence your full-time position at a school with an annual salary of approximately USD
$70,000 – USD $100,000 CTC, depending on where in the United States you live and work, you will
be able to provide your services professionally and efficiently from day one.
