What is a Land-grant University in the U.S.?

Land-grant universities are a group of 112 colleges and universities in the United States designated by the U.S. federal government to receive specific benefits to fulfil a clearly defined mission. These colleges and universities, all owned and managed by state governments, focus primarily on teaching, research, and community outreach.

How are these universities different from traditional universities?
