Cornell University, in both its status and stature as one of the top Ivy League schools, has consistently carved topics for its supplemental section on the Common App, primarily designed to bring out your best. We will briefly explore how you can ace your chances for an admit to Cornell and help you amplify your pathway to success, when the ED decisions are announced in mid-December, 2026.

We all contribute to, and are influenced by, the communities that are meaningful to us. Share how you’ve been shaped by one of the communities you belong to. Define community in the way that is most meaningful to you. This community example can be drawn from your family, school, workplace, activities or interests, or any other group you belong to.* 350 words
The essay topic can be easily classified as a classic “community essay,” much on the lines of the community essay topic on the UC common App, and several other universities. That being said, Cornell wants something more from you.
You should first select the community that will be your primary focus. Even the sky is not the limit here. If you belong to the Gipsy or the Bedouin tribe communities, highly unlikely that you do, write about it. The standard communities to which applicants have typically belonged to include the high school community, theater community, dance community, music community, a community of like-minded students involved in social service and community outreach, or even a community focused on sports.
350 words do not give you much bandwidth to go into ample detail by way of an introduction. However, you must both briefly mention and describe your community, and THEN transition on to the specifics.
“Share how you’ve been shaped by one of the communities you belong to” is the giveaway operative sentence in this essay. Instead of focusing ONLY on what you did for the community as one of its members, focus also on how it has “shaped” your approach to society, shaped your mindset, your thought processes, and even motivated you to eventually choose an academic track. This is where you will “connect” your community involvement with your proposed degree at Cornell. There may be other ways in which your community has shaped you-- building your confidence, sharpening your inter-personal skills, motivating you to adopt an inclusive approach to your community, and other contributing factors. Stay strictly within the word limit- - an edict that applies to each and every essay you write for your college applications.
By applying to Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), you are also applying for direct entry into one of our 20 majors. From here, you would be part of a community dedicated to purpose-driven science; working within your major and across disciplines to tackle the complex challenges of our time. Why are you drawn to studying the major you have selected and specifically, why do you want to pursue this major at Cornell CALS? You should share how your current interests, related experiences, and/or goals influenced your choice. 550 words*

The topic outlined above for essay 2 is heavy duty both in terms of expectations and content. While classified as a “why” essay, it expects you to literally deep dive into the various reasons why you have chosen (a) your major and (b) Cornell. You should give equal attention to both sub-prompts:

• Introduction: 25 words
• Why your major: 250 words
• Why Cornell: 250 words
• Conclusion: 25 words

These are only estimates with some flexibility with regard to word counts.

In all probability, you have very specific reasons why you have chosen your major. If medicine is your choice for instance, what has motivated you to choose the pre-med program at Cornell, in combination with a relevant major such as biology, biotechnology, or chemistry? Merely mentioning your major and adding a few lines about your reasons for the choice is not sufficient. Focus on specific reasons that have motivated you to choose your major. If there is a story behind your choice, mention it but only briefly. Admissions officers love to read stories which gives them a glimpse into the applicant’s personal life. Do not, however, allow your story to overtake the reasons for your choice. Keep it short, sweet, and simple. You need to be even more specific regarding your reasons for choosing your major if your choice is non-standard such as anthropology or classical studies. The key here is to leave no stone unturned to persuade your admissions officer about the level of commitment and motivation you exercise regarding your choice of major.

In the section of this essay where you address the sub-prompt “why Cornell,” you should be even more specific. Mention the following and this is almost mandatory:

• Research focus during college and how Cornell has the most eminent faculty in your field of choice
• Mention the name of at least one professor whose research perfectly aligns with your subject and research interest
• Why Cornell: 250 words
• Names of two or three undergraduate courses, along with full names and course numbers, which will directly contribute to your academic mission at Cornell
• Names of research labs, research institutes and outreach projects at Cornell that will empower you in your quest for knowledge and professional success

Additionally, if you are a sports, music, dance, or theatre enthusiast, or a professional in the making, mention the names of two clubs which will connect you directly with the Cornell fraternity. One of the clubs you mention should be an academic club at Cornell such as the Data Science Club. Moreover, this will also indicate that you have conducted your research and have not submitted what is proverbially referred to as a “cookie-cutter” essay.

The emphasis on research in your essay is critical. All Ivy League schools, including Cornell, are research universities, and are prominently listed in the Carnegie Classification Framework, which was revised in 2025. Carnegie has, once again, been awarded the R1 ranking which is the top research ranking in the United States. Hence the emphasis on research in your essay.
